Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt criticized the budget passed by Senate Democrats for Michigan’s 2026 fiscal year. In a statement released on Wednesday, Nesbitt expressed his disapproval of the legislation, claiming it prioritizes “criminals and their out-of-touch radical social agenda over hardworking Michiganders.”

Nesbitt pointed out that state spending has increased significantly since Governor Whitmer took office, alleging that Democrats have pushed through another budget that raises taxes and expands government size without addressing important issues for Michigan residents.

The Republican leader highlighted specific concerns about budget allocations, such as funding for housing illegal immigrants, programs assisting underprivileged individuals in growing and selling cannabis, and studies on taxing mileage driven. He emphasized the rejection of nearly 90 amendments proposed by Republicans aimed at creating a bipartisan budget package. These amendments included measures to support local police cooperation in deporting dangerous criminal illegal aliens and safeguarding Michigan tax dollars from corporations connected to foreign adversaries.

According to Nesbitt, “Michiganders deserve a state government that operates responsibly,” emphasizing the need to cut back on wasteful spending and prioritize common goals. Despite his criticism, he noted there is still an opportunity to amend the legislation as it moves through the House and Senate, urging lawmakers to “put Michigan first.”
