Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt has called on Senate Democrats to move forward with funding aimed at helping Northern Michigan residents recover from a severe ice storm that struck earlier this year. The storm led to widespread power outages, property damage, and economic difficulties throughout the region.
“It’s been months since the ice storm hit, and Northern Michigan families are still struggling to rebuild,” said Nesbitt, R-Porter Township. “These are our neighbors, our communities, and they deserve help now.”
The federal government approved disaster relief for Michigan after President Donald Trump signed off on the state’s request last month. Despite this support and bipartisan backing for state-level aid, House Bill 4328 remains stalled in the Senate Committee on Appropriations. The bill has not seen movement for three months.
“The House, Senate Republicans and the governor are at the table, ready to act,” Nesbitt said. “Instead of playing political games while people are in need of relief, Senate Democrats need to stop obstructing and do what’s right for the people of Michigan.”
Nesbitt emphasized that the proposed disaster relief package would direct funds toward repairing storm-related damage, supporting local businesses, and assisting affected families.
“We have a responsibility to put Michiganders first,” Nesbitt said.
