Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt from Porter Township expressed concerns following predictions of lower state revenues and increasing unemployment in Michigan. These forecasts were discussed during the annual May Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference held on Friday.

Nesbitt criticized the economic policies, stating, “We’re seeing the impact of ‘Bidenomics’ and ‘Whitmeromics’ on Michigan’s economy. At a time when Michiganders are facing higher unemployment and economic uncertainty than most states, Lansing Democrats seem to think now is a good time to raise taxes and fees.”

He highlighted that Senate Democrats recently approved a state budget larger than Governor Whitmer’s earlier proposal this year. Nesbitt argued, “Hardworking taxpayers cannot afford a state government that continues to grow without bounds. The Democrats’ plan to keep overspending and raising taxes could not be more wrong for Michigan.”

As the Legislature moves towards finalizing the state budget, Nesbitt emphasized the need for fiscal restraint and tax relief. He pointed out, “There is plenty of room — in a budget that has grown more than 40% since Gov. Whitmer came into office — to fix our crumbling roads and bridges, as well as make meaningful investments in education and public safety without raising taxes.”

Nesbitt concluded by urging lawmakers to prioritize cuts in the state budget over increased spending: “Democrats have used the state budget to put bloated government first. It’s time to change direction and actually put the people of Michigan first.”
