State Senator Thomas Albert, along with four Republican colleagues, has introduced a legislative package aimed at restoring Michigan’s status as a Right to Work state and repealing prevailing wage laws. The proposal is designed to stimulate job creation and improve the state’s economy, which currently struggles with high unemployment rates.
Albert, representing Lowell, stated that “Lansing Democrats have moved our economy backward by relying on failed strategies that discourage economic growth and prosperity.” He emphasized the need for change to attract business and enhance economic opportunities for residents.
The central piece of the legislation is Senate Bill 436, sponsored by Albert, which seeks to reinstate Right to Work in the private sector. This would allow workers the choice of joining unions. Michigan had maintained Right to Work status for over a decade until its repeal in 2023.
Albert argued that without this status, Michigan risks losing out on new business investments and limits workers’ freedom of choice regarding union membership. “No worker should be forced to join a political organization against their will,” he said.
The proposed legislation also targets prevailing wage mandates, which Albert claims inflate taxpayer costs and deter investment. He views the restoration of Right to Work and the repeal of these mandates as critical for Michigan’s economic future.
In addition to these measures, Albert advocates for reducing tax rates, eliminating corporate welfare programs, and aligning state business regulations with federal standards to further bolster economic growth.
