Senator Aric Nesbitt, a Republican member of the Michigan Senate, posted a series of tweets on February 26, 2026, criticizing Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s fiscal policies and proposed tax measures.
In his first tweet, Nesbitt listed several areas targeted by new taxes. He wrote: “Whitmer is calling for new taxes on:
-Vapes
-Tobacco
-Sports Betting
-Digital Advertising
-Trash. Actual Trash.
Actions speak louder than words. If she was serious about making life affordable for Michiganders, she wouldn’t be trying to slap new taxes on them every year.” (posted February 26, 2026).
In a follow-up post made minutes later, Nesbitt criticized the governor’s use of the term “investment.” He stated: “Every time she says ‘investment,’ hold onto your wallet.
That’s code for ‘laundering your tax dollars to her political allies.'” (posted February 26, 2026).
Nesbitt also addressed state spending under Governor Whitmer in another tweet. He claimed: “Since Whitmer took office, the state budget has exploded from $59B to $88B.
That’s a 49% increase in spending.
Are your roads 49% better? Is your school 49% better?” (posted February 26, 2026).
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has advocated for increased investment in infrastructure and education during her tenure as Michigan’s governor. The proposed tax measures referenced by Senator Nesbitt are part of ongoing debates over how to fund public services and address budgetary priorities within the state government.
