Oakland Community College issued the following announcement on Nov. 20.

Beat the Semester-End Rush and Register Today for Academic Support Center Tutoring

Imagine you are walking to class and as you reach the door to the building you spy a stack of $100 bills—14 in all—lying on the ground. You immediately lunge for the cash, but a gust of wind blows the bills away before you can grab them.

While this surely sounds like a dream, there’s an alternate ending to this tale that’s within reach for all OCC students: the wealth of free academic tutoring services available at the Academic Support Center (ASC) on all OCC campuses. Currently registered OCC students are eligible for tutoring services valued at more than $1,400 per student per semester. Not taking advantage of this free service is like letting money slip through your fingers.

“Tutoring services benefit every student, regardless of current academic performance. With the close of the semester just a few weeks out, now is the perfect time to schedule a tutoring session with one of our trained, certified and very capable ASC tutors,” said Lisa Nemitz, Orchard Ridge Campus ASC faculty member.

In-person tutoring is available to all students on each campus for many OCC courses. Online tutoring is also available through D2L for current students, and students previously enrolled in a D2L course.

Students who take advantage of these tutoring services, especially in the weeks leading up to finals, have higher GPAs and are more likely to complete their courses.

“Tutoring directly contributes to improvements in time management, study skills, goal achievement and student satisfaction,” said Nemitz. “OCC is committed to having these free resources available.”

Student feedback via the ASC tutoring program evaluation process is positive.
