Berkley School District issued the following announcement on Feb. 19.
The Berkley and Royal Oak communities came together on Monday, January 20, to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This Day of Service: A Day On, Not a Day Off, began with a breakfast at Berkley High School and continued in the Auditorium. Volunteers heard words from the event committee and student’s including a video from Royal Oak & Berkley High video students, sharing what a day of service meant to them. Students from both districts finished reciting Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech after the audience watched Dr. King deliver the speech at the Lincoln Memorial.
Volunteers spent the rest of the morning giving their time and energy to make a difference. On-site, volunteers assembled hygiene kits, sorted donations, made blankets for children, and wrote letters to veterans and active duty soldiers. Off-site, volunteers traveled to Yad Ezra, Cass Community Services and to the Redford Brightmoor Initiative to paint and do hand’s on labor and complete service projects. New this year was a Children’s Activity Center. Children had the opportunity to learn to play African music, make an “I Have a Dream” mobile, hear stories about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., listen to a special guest storyteller share Dr. Kings’ life as Coretta Scott King and lastly, watched Our Friend Martin, an animated film about Dr. King’s life. Berkley High School Diversity Council students organized and supervised these new options.
Thanks to everyone for attending and remembering the spirit of Dr. King through service. Please enjoy this video, and hear from students on the importance of the day.
