Thirteen individuals allegedly involved in a plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer have all been charged, including six men whom federal law enforcement charged with authoring the plot and seven individuals charged in state court for their alleged involvement.
The plot was to kidnap Whitmer from her Elk Rapids vacation home and also involved attacks on law enforcement, according to coverage by The Oakland Press.
The charges stem from an FBI investigation that began in the spring, according to The Oakland Press. Information gathered using confidential sources and undercover FBI personnel includes evidence that members of the group conducted surveillance of Whitmer’s vacation home on two occasions.
The group is alleged to have intended to kidnap Whitmer and stage a "trial," during which she would be accused of treason, according to The Oakland Press. The entire plot was supposed to have taken place prior to the Nov. 3 general election.
The individuals involved are also alleged to have staged rehearsals for their planned attack in August and September, according to The Oakland Press.
