Berkley School District issued the following announcement on July 26.
Over the last week we have heard from a number of parents/guardians looking for additional details on what the in-person learning safety protocols will look like and some questions on what an average day of virtual learning will be. We continue to review the CDC guidance for K-12 Schools, the MDHHS guidance for operating schools safely and will continue to consult with Oakland County Health Division as we approach the first day of school.
At this time, the in-person school day will look very similar to what it would during a normal school day - with safety protocols in place. Safety protocols include excellent ventilation systems and air filtration, spacing students as much as we can, providing hand sanitizer in every classroom, disinfecting desks between classes at the secondary level, disinfecting bathrooms every four hours, drinking fountains will be available for bottle filling only, and deep cleaning our buildings every evening.
Based on the CDC guidance, some things will change from last year. Students will be allowed to play outside without masks, materials will be sharable in classrooms, and in-person meetings can resume if requested.
As we shared before, our decision on mask wearing and the complete list of safety protocols will be announced in August to ensure we have the most up to date information from public health officials. However, if masks are important to your family, know that no matter what the final decision is, your children will be welcome to wear them.
As for virtual learning, most of the learning will be independent, watching recorded videos the teachers provide and completing work both on and off screen. Both programs encourage heavy parent participation for elementary students, upwards of 5-6 hours a day, to support your child's learning and to keep them on track. Additional details on the virtual programs can be found on our website.
Thank you for your patience as we work toward finalizing our plans. I hope you’re taking time to enjoy the summer.
