The goal of this year’s Berkley High School BeDrama Spring Musical was to simply have a show. When Grease was cancelled last year, District Drama coordinator John Hopkins did not want to see the pain on the faces of his students again this year. John and his team got to work on how they could pull off a safe spring 2021 show, while having the students perform without masks on. They came to the conclusion to have the show outside.
Students practiced inside while others built their set in the student parking lot. As the show approached, students began rapid COVID-19 tests daily to ensure come show time, everyone was safe and virus free. The regular testing allowed students to perform for the audience without masks so they could experience the full show.
Several months of rehearsal and planning led up to the opening weekend of Mamma Mia! on May 6-8. Thursday and Friday night, the cast and crew had to adapt to the changing weather outside and held the show in the BHS East Gym. Then on Saturday night, they were able to perform on the outside stage to a parking lot filled with supportive and enthusiastic community members. Watch our video below to hear from members of the show as they reflect on what Mamma Mia! meant to them.
