Berkley School District issued the following announcement on Nov 3.
Good Morning, Berkley Schools Community,
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approved the COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11 last night. CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky, M.D., M.P.H., endorsed the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendation that children 5 to 11 years old be vaccinated against COVID-19 with the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine. CDC now expands vaccine recommendations to about 28 million children in the United States in this age group and allows providers to begin vaccinating them as soon as possible.
The Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) has been working behind the scenes to prepare for the 5-11 year old roll out. They have selected many school districts around Oakland County to be host sites for vaccine clinics. Unfortunately, our request to provide a host clinic was not accepted, but we hope you find the list of options below helpful.
OCHD selected Oak Park High School (November 18, 4-7:30 pm) and Hazel Park High School (November 8, 4-7:30 pm) as the closest sites to our District, however, many clinics are available county-wide, including in Madison Heights and Southfield. To see a list of clinics and to make an appointment, visit the OCHD Vaccine Clinic website. While walk-in appointments will be available, making appointments ahead of time is strongly recommended to avoid wait times.
Many local pediatricians are also offering COVID-19 vaccines for current patients, ages 5 and up.
Meijer has an online scheduling system that now includes children ages 5 and up.
Walgreens is scheduling appointments for children ages 5 and up. Their website states: appointments for pediatric doses will be available at select stores beginning Saturday, November 6.
CVS is scheduling appointments for children ages 5 and up. Their website states: Select CVS Pharmacy® locations will be offering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for ages 5 and up starting Sunday, November 7.
Beaumont Health: Registration for a limited number of appointments for kids ages 5 and up will begin online early next week through the hospital system. Parents and legal guardians who would like to register their children for a COVID-19 vaccine must have a MyBeaumontChart account for their child and parental access to the account.
Beaumont vaccine clinics will be offered:
- Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 at Beaumont Hospital, Troy
- Nov. 13 and Nov. 20 at the Beaumont Service Center in Southfield
The Berkley School District is also exploring options to bring a COVID-19 vaccine clinic to one of our schools for children ages 5 and older. If we are able to work with a local provider to do so, we will communicate the details with our school community.
While our safety protocols are doing a great job keeping our COVID-19 numbers low, the OCHD and CDC advise the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is through a vaccine. We encourage you to explore the Oakland County Health Division options for vaccine availability and call the Oakland County Nurse on Call line, (M-F, 8:30 am-5 pm) to answer any health-related questions you may have at 1-800-848-5544.
Sincerely,
Scott Francis
