Berkley School District issued the following announcement on Feb 21.
In celebration of Black History Month, the Berkley African American Parent Network (BAAPN) hosted an essay contest for middle and high school students. The contest asked students to identify a notable African American and write an essay on how that person impacted their life due to their significant contributions to history.
After reviewing the entries, the BAAPN awarded the essay winners this week.
Congratulations to the middle school winners:
- 1st place: Aaron Rayford
- 2nd place: Olivia Murrary
- 3rd place: Paul Cascade
Khadija Walker-Fobbs, BAAPN President said, “We chose William because he wrote about his favorite soccer star, Pele, with such passion. He described how the extreme poverty and hardship that Pele faced as a youth was so inspiring because he overcame so many challenges to become the best in the world.”
Here is a selection from William’s essay:
“I don't know what I'd be doing if I hadn't found a love for soccer. Even now, I still find myself modeling my game after him. He's the man that changed the game, lives, and brought motivation to people all across the world. Uniting their interest in their newfound love for the game of soccer. Pele’ was the person who promoted my passion for soccer.”
Congratulations, everyone!
