The City of Royal Oak recently created a new city board - the human rights commission. The purpose of the human rights commission shall be to advise the city commission and the city manager and assist with efforts to bring greater equity and inclusion of diverse groups within the City of Royal Oak. There are 7 seats open for voting members, and 1 non-voting student member that can be appointed this year.
Membership can be made up of Royal Oak residents, business owners, and employees of businesses located in Royal Oak or anyone with a Royal Oak connection. Not ever seat is required to be filled by a Royal Oak resident, but non-residents should have a connection to the city. Perhaps you own a business, own property, or are employed within the city. Seats this year for voting members will be available in 1-, 2-, or 3-year terms and the student member’s term coincide with the start of each school year. Staff anticipates that the board will spend between 5-10 hours a month on board related activities including meetings, time spend outside of meetings on any program needs or research on behalf of the board. This is subject to change as the board begins to develop the direction that they would like to work in.
