State Rep. Tom Kuhn | Michigan House Republicans

State Representative Tom Kuhn, a Republican from Troy, has expressed his concerns about the focus on student success in community colleges in response to Governor Gretchen Whitmer's State of the State address. In her address, the governor proposed several new programs, including two years of free community college for all high school graduates. However, Rep. Kuhn believes that the state should prioritize student success rather than simply providing access to community colleges.

Kuhn, who has extensive experience in community college governance, stated, "The most important focus for our community colleges should be student success." He added, "Unfortunately, too many students graduate from our high schools with insufficient skills to successfully complete two years of community college. We want to ensure that all students who have access to community college also have access to be successful at the community college level."

Michigan's education system has been struggling, with the state ranking near the bottom of the country in reading scores. Shockingly, seven out of every ten fourth graders in Michigan schools are unable to read proficiently. Rep. Kuhn believes that improving the abilities of students should be the top priority. He emphasized the importance of a significantly improved K-12 education system and enhanced developmental education programs at the community college level.

In his statement, Rep. Kuhn highlighted the lack of commitment in the governor's address to address the need for student success. He stated, "I don't see any commitment in the Governor's State of the State that addresses the need for student success."

It is clear that Rep. Kuhn believes that access to community college is not enough. In order to truly benefit students, the focus should be on providing them with the necessary skills and support to succeed. As the state looks to improve its education system, it is crucial that efforts are made to address the deficiencies in K-12 education and developmental programs at the community college level.

Rep. Kuhn's perspective sheds light on the importance of student success and the need for comprehensive educational reforms. As Michigan strives to improve its education system, it is essential that the voices of experienced individuals like Rep. Kuhn are heard and considered. Only then can the state ensure a brighter future for its students.
