Senator Aric Nesbitt, a Republican member of the Michigan Senate, criticized Democratic leadership and Michigan’s U.S. Senators in a series of social media posts on October 22, 2025. The tweets focused on ongoing political disputes over education policy and a federal government shutdown.

In one post, Nesbitt commented on Democratic management of education: "There’s a lot to unpack here. Long story short, don’t leave Democrats in charge of education." (October 22, 2025).

Later that day, he addressed the impact of the government shutdown on Michigan residents and criticized Senators Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin: "Michiganders are starting to feel the effects of the Democrat shutdown. Unfortunately, our Senators Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin don’t care how many people they hurt as long as they can get healthcare for illegals. The people of our state deserve so much better than this." (October 22, 2025).

In another tweet posted minutes later, Nesbitt further accused Michigan's senators of prioritizing partisan interests: "Michigan's Senators @SenatorSlotkin and @SenGaryPeters have voted 12 TIMES to keep the government shutdown to protect healthcare for illegal immigrants. They don't care who gets hurt as long as their extremist base is happy." (October 22, 2025).

The comments come amid an ongoing federal government shutdown in late 2025. According to reports at that time, disputes between congressional Republicans and Democrats centered around budget provisions related to immigration policy and funding for public services. Senator Aric Nesbitt has previously been vocal about his opposition to Democratic priorities in both state and national politics.

Gary Peters serves as Michigan’s senior U.S. Senator since 2015, while Elissa Slotkin was elected to the U.S. Senate from Michigan in November 2024 after serving three terms in the House of Representatives.
