Birmingham Family YMCA issued the following announcement on Nov. 5.
On Sunday, November 17th nearly 800 youth from across Metro Detroit will step up to the starting line to celebrate their fall season with a 5K run.
Girls on the Run creatively uses running to build self-confidence and teach crucial life skills to girls in grades third through eighth. Over the 10-week season, girls explore a variety of topics and issues that impact their everyday lives, develop competence, confidence, and caring, and give back to their communities through a Community Impact Project of their choosing.
STRIDE is a fun fitness program for boys in grades third through fifth. While building endurance to compete in a 5K, participants develop excellence in character by exploring themes like teamwork, perseverance, and wellness and discussing them in a safe, supportive environment of their peers.
Joined by over 600 volunteer coaches, family members, and friends, 760 girls and boys are expected to run, skip, or hop across the finish line at this season’s 5K event. Another 5,000 spectators are also expected to attend and cheer participants on as they finish out the season with joy and confidence. All teams will begin the race between 9:00 and 9:30am and finish by 11:00am. Grounds open at 7:30am.
Thank you to our sponsor, Delta Airlines, for empowering youth in Metro Detroit.
