City of Birmingham issued the following announcement on Sept 3.
Residents Making a Difference: This month, we recognize Birmingham resident and Auxiliary Police Unit Officer Alex Calderone, for his swift, live-saving actions during his neighborhood's block party. During the party, eight-year-old Violet began to choke on a piece of watermelon. Auxiliary Officer Calderone performed the Heimlich maneuver, ultimately clearing the airway. In a choking situation, there is only about a two minute window to react before lack of oxygen can cause severe brain damage or death. Thank you Auxiliary Officer Calderone – we are proud to have heroes like you in our community.
How can you be prepared in the event of an emergency? The Birmingham Fire Department offers a Friends and Family CPR course monthly to residents of all ages. The 2-hour course covers the Heimlich maneuver, CPR and more for both adult and pediatric. For more information visit bhamgov.org/fire.
