City of Hazel Park issued the following announcement on Oct 14.
Hazel Park... You are invited and we look forward to seeing you at our annual Fire Department Open House this Sunday, October 17.
HAZEL PARK, Mich. – The Hazel Park Fire Department will hold its annual Fire Safety Open House from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17. The free event, open to all, will be held at the Fire Station, 22830 Russell Ave., in Hazel Park. The annual event is held to share fire safety tips with the community and will feature:
• Vehicle extrication and fire hose demonstrations
• Fire truck displays
• Bounce house
• Complimentary cider and doughnuts
• Complimentary balloons
• Fire Department T-shirts on sale.
The event coincides roughly with National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 3-9.
Hazel Park Fire Chief, Richard Story, said: "We want to reiterate on an annual basis about basic safety tips. We try to make it fun and reach all ages from little kids up to the elderly,"
The National Fire Protection Association reminds everyone of these life-saving safety tips:
• Plan an escape route from your home and establish a meeting place outside. Hold fire drills as a family.
• Test home smoke detectors frequently; establish a system to remind yourself. Replace detectors every 10 years.
• Generally, a continued set of three loud beeps or chirps means you should evacuate. A single, intermittent chirp indicates you should change the batteries. If the detector still chirps after new batteries are installed, replace it. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for further information.
