Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt criticized Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s decision regarding the timing of a special election to fill the 35th Senate District seat. The seat was left vacant after U.S. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet, D-Bay City, departed for Congress.

Nesbitt said that residents in the district will be without representation in the state Senate for more than 400 days. He stated, “The 270,000 people of Michigan’s 35th Senate District are struggling to make it in Michigan, and for over 400 days, they will be without a state senator to fight for them. This is a complete failure of leadership from the governor, who should be ashamed for abandoning these hardworking families.”

Governor Whitmer called for a special election to fill the vacancy but set the date so that constituents would remain unrepresented for an extended period.

The 35th Senate District covers parts of mid-Michigan and has been without a senator since McDonald Rivet’s departure.
